WTF is a hoon? Wikipedia tells us.

Hoon is a derogatory term used in Australia and New Zealand to refer to a younger person who engages in loutish, anti-social behaviour. In particular, it is used to refer to one who drives in a manner which is anti-social by the standards of contemporary society, that is, fast, noisily or dangerously. Hoon activities can include speeding, burnouts, doughnuts or screeching tires.[1] Those commonly identified as being involved in "hooning" or street racing are young, predominantly commodore drivers who are male although increasingly female drivers in the age range of 17 and 35 years.

Wikipedia also tells us that there is anti-hoon legislation that has been passed in Australia. I would have thought that driving like a dumbass was already illegal in Australia, but apparently not.

  2. You forget that Australia was originally founded by convicts. And thus many everyday normal rules that you and I take for granted have slipped by the wayside over the decades.

    I actually lived as an Aussie for a year of my youth. Some other fun Aussie slang:

    Root = F*ck
    Fair Dinkum = genuine
    Drongo = idiot, dumb ass
    Grouse (pronounced ‘gross’ = way cool
    Trough Lolly = urinal cake
